Many children in Rio de Janeiro are escaping gang or drug wars and flee for their own safety. The streets are full of beaten and bruised children with no place to go. As a last resort they congregate in urban centres often turning to crime and drugs, segregated and forgotten by society.

We aim to achieve a measurable and sustainable reduction in the number of street children and children living in extreme poverty.

Homeless Child aims to promote community development to reduce vulnerability amongst both street and working children in urban centres, breaking the cycle of economic deprivation which is passed from parents to children and developing sustainable solutions to  give children the support, education and happiness they deserve.

Mulryan Family Foundation Centre, Zona Oeste, RJ

The Mulryan Family Foundation Centre, is a state-of-the-art village of homes for children, currently being implemented in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro. The project will offer education, social and psychological support to children, as well as support for their families to improve their homes and capacity as parents to enable their children to return to them.  The centre is designed to care for children with disabilities and the project includes support for these children and their families to integrate them into society.
The centre’s work is focused on children, adolescents and young adults, fighting for the promotion and defense of their human rights, with the aim to strengthen relationships within the family and the community. The project includes recreational and vocational training facilities for the children in the homes as well as the local community.

The centre is being designed using a pro-poor sustainability analysis to ensure its structure for the long-term, taking into account all environmental, local and economic factors.

Projeto Alcançando Vidas, São Gonçalo, RJ

kidsLocated in one of the most deprived areas of Rio de Janeiro which is subject to extreme violence, the local families of Bairro Vermelho in São Gonçalo suffer from poor sanitation and lack of access to schools and crèches. The ‘Reaching Lives’ Project is a community project and creche that cares for and educates 60 children from the local community, providing the children and their family with the neccessary social support for a better future.

The Project also seeks to help the local families by offering judicial aid, advice, social assistance and access to courses and work opportunities to bring about a bigger change within the local community.

We have committed to help improve the facilities at the crèche by renovating the precarious building that existed and extending the building to improve the project infrastructure. This will increase the capacity of the creche to 150 children and provide space for workshops in the evenings for the local communtity. We are also building a sports hall on the building so the project can offer further services to the community.

Creche Comunitária, Nova Holanda, Maré, RJ

creche_2_18The Creche Comunitária (Community Creche) supports 45 children aged 2-4 years in a community which suffers from constant violence from warring drug factions.
The families of the children are living in situations of risk, suffering exclusion, inadequate conditions and vulnerability. Through its partner organisations on the ground in the community, the crèche helps improve both the social and educational development of the children and their families, with the intention to strengthen the potential of this community for the future and ultimately improve the quality of life for those living in Nova Holanda.

Our commitment is to offer the best conditions for education in terms of space and infrastructure.  We designed a three storey building for the crèche to have a more adequate and safer surroundings for their children.

Criança do Brasil, Lote XV, RJ

dsc01482Developed by the local community in response to the urgent need to bring attention to the extreme poverty of the Lote XV neighbourhood of Duque de Caxias, the Children of Brasil runs two crèches in the area caring for more than 100 children and also implementing, on a wider scale, a nutrition program throughout the community. The project provides additional support helping families and individuals access their essential rights to documentation, legal help, shelter, and education on an individual basis.

The Children of Brasil aim to provide high quality education for children who live in situations of risk in extremely poor communities, and we want to help them.

We have set up a volunteer project which will enable the project to open information technology classes, languages courses and revision classes. These will be the only classes of their kind in the area and will be greatly valued. We support the project with their wide variety of needs.

Plans for further support include the construction of a community centre, which will provide essential infrastructure to expand socio-educational work in the local community.

Casa Irlanda, Santa Teresa, RJ

In 2008, we built Casa Irlanda, a three storey children’s home for twenty at-risk children aged 6-12 years old, for Task Brasil. The project will provide the children, who have been rescued from situations of risk by social services, with access to education, sports, arts and music workshops.

Specialised counselling and support will be available to help reunite the children with their families and when this is not possible, open the doors to foster care and adoption. A family support program will be implemented to offer the children support for long after they have left the shelter.

Individual donations by Homeless Child

A donation of fifty thousand pounds was made to Task Brasil in 2007 to buy Casa Charlotte, a home for up to 20 pregnant girls, young mothers and their children. This project is situated downtown in the Lapa district close to the centre of Rio de Janeiro city. Here the teenage girls will be offered social and family support, access to income generating workshops, school, training, employment and assistance to reintegrate with their families.

lutaLuta pela Paz (Fight for Peace) is providing essential support to youths and adolescents in Nova Holanda. The construction of a proper roof and upper level has provided an open space where arts and sports can now be preformed. Additionally the third floor means that the building will be much cooler during the hot summer months.
